Podocarpus
The Podocarpus, also commonly known as Yew Pine, Buddhist Pine, or Fern Pine, is a beautiful evergreen conifer with soft, leathery, dark green needle-like leaves arranged in dense spirals. It features a neat, upright or rounded growth habit that makes it excellent for hedges, topiary, privacy screens, or as a striking potted specimen. This versatile, slow-growing plant adds year-round structure and rich green texture with a refined, elegant look.
Care Instructions:
Light: Full sun to partial shade. It performs well in bright light and can tolerate some direct sun, though it adapts to lower light conditions indoors.
Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy, especially during the first year while establishing. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Once established, it becomes quite drought tolerant.
Soil: Well-draining, fertile soil — sandy or loamy mixes work best. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH and does not tolerate heavy, waterlogged soil.
Humidity: Tolerates average indoor humidity; appreciates moderate to higher levels (40–60%). Mist occasionally if the air is very dry.
Temperature: Prefers 60–75°F (15–24°C). Keep above 55°F (13°C) and protect from cold drafts or frost. Hardy in USDA zones 8–11; bring indoors in colder climates.
Maintenance: Low-maintenance and easy to grow. Prune or shear anytime to maintain shape, encourage density, or create topiary. Fertilize lightly in spring with a balanced fertilizer for healthy growth.
With proper care, your Podocarpus will develop a lush, dense appearance and provide long-lasting evergreen beauty indoors or outdoors.
